Rally: Defending Alaska's Liberties

Hosted by the ACLU of Alaska:

“Rally with us to defend Alaska’s constitutional liberties on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019 at 2 p.m. That afternoon the Court will hear oral arguments in our suit against Governor Michael Dunleavy. The Governor attacked the Alaska Court System, the independent judiciary, and the constitutional separation of powers that protects the rights of every Alaskan when he vetoed funding from the Alaska Court System because the Alaska Supreme Court ruled in a manner at odds with his personal and political beliefs about women’s rights and reproductive rights.

Governor Dunleavy has attacked the Court for defending a woman’s constitutionally protected right to choose. What’s next? LGBTQ rights? Workers’ rights? When Alaskans’ rights are on the line, judges should be weighing the law, not the chance of budget cuts from the Governor.”

Catch us at the Elders and Youth Conference

“First Alaskans Institute’s 36th Annual Elders & Youth Conference (Elders & Youth) theme, “Qaneryararput Yugtun Piniqerput/Qaneryararput Cugtun Kayuqerput,” celebrates the beauty and importance of Alaska Native languages. This year’s conference will kick off with a Warming of the Hands pre-conference gathering on Sunday, October 13 with the main conference taking place October 14-16 at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks, Alaska. Elders & Youth provides a special opportunity to make connections, reinforce identity and belonging, explore art and issues, and contribute to the greater community through the transference of knowledge between our generations.

The Elders & Youth theme, “Qaneryararput Yugtun Riniqerput/Qaneryararput Cugtun Kayuqerput,” fluidly translates to “Language is Our Super Power”, and honors how we are stronger with our languages. When spoken, they connect us to our Ancestors, our lands, waters and animals, provide healing, and instruct us in living our ways of life. Our languages reside within us and we are responsible for putting them to use for a stronger future; upholding this responsibility, First Alaskans will choose a different Alaska Native language each year to highlight with our theme. This year, we selected the Yugtun and Cugtun languages, spoken by Yup’ik and Cup’ik peoples of the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta region.”

HB 2001 Public Testimony- Restore the Funding Juneau Edition

There are several opportunities to testify on HB 2001, a bill that will make appropriations from the earnings reserve to set the amount of the PFD for 2019. There is an opportunity to restore the funding that was cut by the governor's vetoes in this bill. The governor could, and likely will veto those attempts to restore funding, but legislators are continuing to work together to gain the needed 8 votes to successfully override those vetoes in another attempt. The work we have collectively done over the last several weeks is making a difference. Keep calling, keep writing, keep sending thank yous, and if you can, show up to testify in Anchorage, Mat-Su, Fairbanks, or Juneau to share your views on the importance of restoring this funding ASAP!

Public testimony opportunities are 2-7 pm with public comments limited to 2 minutes. Sign up to testify by 6:30 pm.
