Write a Letter to the Editor
Why write a Letter to the Editor?
Have you or a loved one been personally affected by the Governor’s vetoes? Share your story!
Letters to the Editor are powerful tools for communicating with members of the general public, as well as local public officials who read them often.
They are short, so they don’t take very long to write, and they have been known to be a generally effective medium for education and persuasion.
How to write a Letter to the Editor:
Be Brief
Try and keep your letter under 250 words, if it is too long the outlet is less likely to publish it. Be sure to check what the word limit is for your local news outlet.
Be Effective
What is the point you are trying to make? Stick to that one topic. Have another idea? Consider writing another letter!
Is there an action you want your readers, or a particular public official, to take in response? Communicate that. Be as clear and concise as possible.
Be Personal
Don't be afraid to share your personal experience; how you felt, or how you or a loved one responded to your particular situation. Personal letters are often the most moving and the most powerful.
Do you have expertise or experience in the particular subject you’re discussing? Let your reader know!
Where do I submit my Letter to the Editor? And what is my local news outlet’s word limit?
